In Detailed Application Form(DAF) for UPSC Mains, you will have to choose two languages one for the purpose of General Studies and Essay paper and for the purpose of Indian Regional Language which is qualifying in nature.
During filling DAF you have to choose the language in which you want to write your mains paper. Once you will choose you to have to stick with that language for GS Paper I, II, III, IV, Essay Paper.
You have to choose any one language form 23 language which includes HINDI, ENGLISH and other languages mentioned in Schedule VIII of the Indian constitution.
You can write other papers like Optional, English qualifying, Indian Regional Languages, in other languages.
Languages among which you have to chose :
You have to choose one Indian Regional Language paper which is qualifying in nature. You will have to write this Indian Regional language in the language you will choose.
Which language you will have to use in U.P.S.C. Mains in different papers?
1. Essay Paper: The language you have chosen.
2. General Studies Paper I: The language you have chosen.
3. General Studies Paper-II: The language you have chosen.
4. General Studies Paper III: The language you have chosen.
5. General Studies Paper IV: The language you have chosen.
6. English Compulsory: English.
7. Indian Regional Language: Indian Regional Language you have chosen.
8. Optional Subject: Language you have chosen (if it is not literature)
Languages available in UPSC mains to choose as an Indian Regional Language:
All the 22 languages which are available in Schedule 8 of the Indian Constitution are available to choose as Indian Regional language. Among these 22 languages, you have to choose anyone. The nature of Indian Regional language available is qualifying in nature. Marks obtained in this paper will not be added in final marks on which merit list is formed.
But if you fail to score qualifying marks in the Indian Regional language paper then other papers will not be evaluated. So chose your Indian Regional Language carefully and give proper attention to it.
Languages in which question papers are available
The languages in which UPSC CSE question papers are available in only English and Hindi medium. Though the Literature paper is available in their respective languages.
So during Prelims questions are available in Hindi and English only.
During Mains examination question papers of Essay, General Studies I, II, III, IV and Optional Paper(except literature) are available in Hindi and English only.
Indian Regional Language Paper is available in their respective languages only. It means Odiya will have questions in Odiya only.
But during mains examinations, students are free to write their papers in other languages( languages which are included in Schedule VIII of Indian constitution and English).
In the literature paper, students will have to write the answer in their respective language and questions are also available in that language only.
All the languages are equally good provided you are well versed in that language. Fact of the matter is that most of the students who write mains opt for English. Resources which are available in English language is large, it definitely help students.
But still if you are not comfortable in English then go for other language.
You have to make your choice for two papers.
1. Indian Regional Language: This is qualifying in nature.
2. Language in which you want to write the answer in General Studies, Essay, and Optional subject.
Yes, all the students have to choose one Indian Regional Language except for the students belongs to the North-Eastern states of India. This paper is qualifying in nature.
No. you can not choose English as your Indian Regional Language.
Yes, every student who will appear in UPSC CSE Mains has to pass one English compulsory paper. This English paper carries maximum marks 300.
