First Woman Prime Minister of India

Indra Priyadarshini Gandhi became the first woman prime minister of India in 1966, after the demise of Lal Bahadur Shastri. She served at this post from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 to 1984. Her term as prime minister of India was full of events. Before overseeing her work first have a look at her personal background.

She was born in the year 1917 and was the daughter of Jawahar Lal Nehru. During the year of study, she stayed in India as well as London, Oxford University.

During the Prime Ministership of Jawahar Lal Nehru, she served as his assistant. She was chosen as the president of the Indian National Congress in 1959. After the demise of her father, she was appointed as a member of Rajya Sabha.

She served in the cabinet of the Lal Bahadur Shastri government and handle the portfolio of Information and Broadcasting Minister.

She assumed the charge of Prime Minister in 1966 after the sudden death of Lal Bahadur Shastri. Thus she became the first women prime minister of India. After becoming the prime minister of India he took a lot of bold decisions.

To solve the problem of the food crisis in India she took the decision to increase food productivity and thus the first Green Revolution happened in 1967 and India became self-sufficient in food production.

She was inspired by the sociologist ideology and privatize the various industries. Privatization 14 major private banks in 1969, privatization of coal in 1973.. and more. She also words Social in the preamble of the Indian constitution.

She abolished the Privy Purse in 1971 granted to the princely states during the time of their merger in the dominion of India.

She went in war with Pakistan in 1971 and supported the separatist group in the East Pakistan which ultimately led to the creation of a new state of Bangladesh.

She imposed National Emergency under (Article 352) in year 1975 on the pretext of separatist tendency in the country. This was the first time the National Emergency was imposed on the basis of Internal Disturbances. Earlier National Emergency was imposed on the basis of War or External Aggression. This emergency led to the suppression of basic human rights and a lot of atrocities were done. Emergency continued till 1977.

42nd Constitutional Amendment Act which was a mini-constitution in itself an altered significant portion of the constitution was brought by her in the year 1976.

When the election was held after the emergency she lost the election due to the negative sentiment of people because of National Emergency.

She again came to power in the year 1980 when Janta Party fail to provide a stable government and a fresh election was held. She got elected as a member of parliament from Raibareli constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

She took strong action against militancy in Punjab. She ordered Operation Blue Star to carry out the operation in Golden Temple of Amritsar and end the militancy. These militants were supported by Pakistan.

She was assassinated on 31st October 1984 by her Sikh Bodyguard, to take revenge against the operation Blue Star.
