Sardar Vallabhbahi Patel became the first Home Minister of India. He took the office of the Ministry of Home Affairs(MoHA) just after independence on 15th August 1947 and remain in office till his death in 1950.
He became the MoHA of India in the cabinet of Jawahar Lal Nehru. Despite being some opinion/ideological differences with Jawahar Lal Nehru. Both of these leaders provided strong and decisive leadership during the partition of the nation.
MoHA is considered as the second senior-most member in the Union Cabinet. He is in charge of the internal security of India. Various important agencies and departments work under this ministry. Like the Central Bureau of Investigation, National Investigation Agency, Police of Union Territories, Paramilitary Forces like BSF, CISF, CRPF, and others.
While working at this post-Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel played a very key role in the unification of India. He was able to unite 565 Princely States to the Dominion of India. While serving at this post he took firm action against some Princely states like Junagarh, Hyderabad and Jammu and Kashmir.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was a key leader during India’s struggle for Independent. He started the participation in national movement during the Kheda Satyagraha in 1918. Since then he has played a key role in the freedom movement.
When Swaraj Party was made by some people of the Indian National Congress he decided not to join the party.
He organized the Bardoli Satyagraha in 1928 and was able to meet the demand of peasants successfully. He became the president of the Indian National Congress in 1931, Karachi Session. He was imprisoned during the Quit India Movement.
After independence, he became the first MoHA of India. He was also given the post of Deputy Prime Minister of India. So he was also the First Deputy Prime Minister of India.
Due to his role in the integration of India a huge statue was made in Gujrat which is known as the Statue of Unity. His birthday(31st October) is celebrated as the National Day of Unity. He is also known as the Iron Man of India.

Smt Indira Gandhi became the first women MoHA of India in 1966.
Mufti Mohammad Sayyed became the first Muslim MoHA of India on 2nd December 1989.
The main work of the MoHA is to maintain law and order situation in the country i.e Internal security.
